Timor-Leste Ten Years On

/

This year marks ten years since I served in East Timor with the Australian Army. East Timor has held a special place in my heart over the last ten years, so I've decided I'm going back to retrace my steps!

East Timor is a country right on our doorstep, full of so much natural beauty, yet so little known by the Australian Public. It is only an hour and twenty minutes from Darwin, much closer than Bali, but it is rarely chosen by Aussies as a holiday destination.

I want to change this. Forget Bali, travel to Timor-Leste!

Come and join the Veterans Instameet team for a Veterans Instameet with a twist!

This Instameet we will leave our hiking boots and tents packed away, instead we will head indoors and focus on portraits.

David Boon from Travel in Pixels will co-host this Instameet and teach us the ins and outs of fine art portraiture.

The aim of the event is for everyone to come away with an understanding of studio lighting, the principles of directing a model and how to compose great portraits indoors using natural and artificial light.

The event will have a $25 cover charge that will cover lunch snacks and a thank you gift to the hosts.

The Instameet will be held in Austral, the exact address will be given on the week of the event. (https://goo.gl/maps/hMNTDsbsQYE2)

Veterans Instameet #14

Come and join the Veterans Instameet team for our last expedition for 2017.

This Instameet with see us escape the hustle and bustle of Sydney, heading North to the Central Coast for some time by the water.

We have rented out a house on Lake Macquarie on Saturday 16th December. Numbers are limited to stay overnight, so it will be a first in best dressed for registration. The address will be provided once you register for the event and confirm you will be staying overnight.

To stay overnight there is a $60 charge for accommodation and food.

The plan is to get to the house before dinner, no later than 6pm. We will put on a BBQ and nibbilies. There are no plans to take photos on the Saturday night, rather more of a social event.

We will be up EARLY the next morning to head 20min out to Catherine Hill Bay to capture the sunrise from the Catherine Hill Bay Pier. For anyone who isn’t staying the night and would like to meet with us, the plan is to arrive around 5:00am at Catherine Hill Bay Surf Life Saving Club.

We plan on having a packed breakfast at Catherine Hill Bay, before leap frogging south to visit some of the Central Coasts best photography spots. Locations will include Nora Head and Long Jetty. We will stop somewhere for lunch (additional charges will apply)

We strongly suggest bringing along the following items:
- Warm weather and wet weather clothing
- Hiking Shoes / shoes with good grip
- A torch
- Food
- Plenty of water
- Camera, tripod and remote (if you have one)

After such great success at the last Veterans Instameet we’d love to do another few care packages to the troops overseas. Last Instameet we sent off SIX care packs filled with goodies!

We would love for everyone to bring along a few extra items again, nothing too crazy, just a few things that the troops will appreciate being on the other side of the world at Christmas.

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to get in touch with one of the team:

Mathew Bell - 0409 241 419
Andrew Judson - 0425 244 597
Warrick Eady - 0431 295 953

We should be in for a great adventure to end the year.
We hope to see you there!

Warrick Eady Photography and I are proud to announce the details of the eighth Veterans Instameet on Sunday 9th October 2016.

The #veterans_instameet‘s were the brain child of Warrick Eady Photography and I, both Afghanistan veterans. We had set out to bring together veterans that share a passion for photography in a relaxed friendly environment. Warrick and I want our participants to share and learn from our combined knowledge of photography in order to help develop everyone’s skills behind the camera.
Everyone is welcome to join - Veterans, ex and current serving ADF, Police and Emergency Service members plus the general public willing to show their support - everyone is welcome to attend in support of those that have served our great nation.

Look through the lens and you’ll see the soldier

- By Jacqueline Cowell -

He reached for the small, black handheld. Placing his index finger on the button, he raised his arms and selected his target. He pointed and shot. There was something calming about a late Sunday afternoon at Bondi Beach. When the waves met the sunset, it was a photographer’s paradise.

Nine years prior, at just 19, Mathew Bell packed his bags, left his family on the Gold Coast and began training with the Australian Army. It was his childhood dream. A dream resembling that of any young boy as they held tightly onto their favourite action figurine, but unlike most, a dream that stuck with him through adolescence.
“All my subjects in high school were focused on what I needed to do to get into the army. In year 11 and 12 that was the focus,” Mathew said.

Under the third battalion for the Royal Australian Regiment, Mathew was enlisted to East Timor in April 2008 and Afghanistan four years later, spending six months in each as a soldier and paratrooper. Being indifferent to photography, it wasn’t until Mathew said goodbye to everyday luxuries and was faced with sporadic Internet and limited phone access, that he found comfort in the camera. Its message reached a wider audience.

“At first I was just taking photos of the scenery, the people, things that caught my eye - in East Timor, they would tie goats and pigs down to the roof of cars and drive around with them,” Mathew said.

“What I photographed wasn’t newsworthy, but it was what was seen day to day… and I wanted to show everyone back home what we were seeing.”

Through his candid, documentary style, Mathew’s passion for visualising his experiences in the army extended beyond his desire to “keep the world up to date”, and led him to establishing MRyan Photography. He sends out a monthly e-Newsletter to stay connected to his friends, family and followers and continues to share his photographs, recently publishing a special edition for the month of April in light of the ANZAC spirit.

Starting as a Facebook page prior to his time in Afghanistan, the business now has almost 150 000 page views on Google+ and a nomination in the 2015 Liverpool Local Business Awards.

“I was originally putting my photos on Facebook, and the amount of response I had from that was incredible,” he said.
“I had mothers writing to me, saying ‘you’ve changed the way I see the world’.”

Having only ever taken one photography course, Mathew finds value in what he can learn from others. Alongside a fellow veteran, he has picked up the tripod and organised what is referred to as a ‘Veterans Instameet’, in which a point is designated – most recently Bondi Beach – where veterans meet and embark on a group photo-shoot.

“The aim is to get people together, specifically veterans, who share a passion for photography. We all share the same experience: the ANZAC experience, and so we just take photos, hang out, and share tips,” Mathew said.

Now 27 years old, Mathew’s intention to return from the army and pursue full-time photography in Sydney didn’t go as planned. Finding he was only getting work Friday through Sunday, the veteran has consequently spent the last two years in real estate.

“Real estate pays the bills, photography keep me sane. It’s a good balance,” Mathew said.

“The photography helped me get that job. It was half the reason I got it. The other half was because of my military career – the whole discipline side of things,” he said.

Real estate aside, Mathew’s photography is far from forgotten. He has published a collection of his photos titled Afghanistan, which was displayed for six weeks at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra and regarded for its honesty and impact.

As for his military career, Mathew hopes to one-day return to the army as a photographer.

“Coming back from Afghanistan, I put my paperwork in to say I wanted to transfer to become a photographer, but there were no vacancies,” He said.

“I think now, the hardest thing would be getting my fiancĂ© to agree to it.”
