Veterans Instameet #38

/
0 Comments

Come and join the Veterans Instameet crew for our thirty eighth instameet on Saturday 15th July 2023.

We will be heading into the Blue Mountains for an evening of astro and light painting.

We will be meeting at the carpark on Cliff Drive at 5:00pm. It is only a short walk down to the shooting location. After sunset, once it gets dark enough we'll be there to photograph the stars and do some light painting again.

Be sure to pack your warm weather gear as it's bound to get chilly as this one doesn't involve much walking around. Bring along your headtorch, stable footwear and plenty of water.

The incredible team at Young Veterans has volunteered to sponsor us for this event. They have put their hands up to cover dinner for us on the night. Bring your Jet Boils and cups canteens, we've got a treat in store for you...unfortunately the defence cooks who make the hot boxes weren't available, so we've had to go with something a little fancier!

If you can't make it along, please SHARE this event with any Veterans you know that are into photography, word of mouth is our best tool in spreading our reach and growing the community.

We have three cameras available to anyone who wishes to try their hand at photography but doesn't want to commit to buying their own gear. If you'd like to borrow the cameras and tripods please let me know beforehand.

Our Veterans Instameets have always been and will continue to be free of charge, though participation via donation is encouraged. We don't ask for a huge donation, though each event is costing us money through insurances etc. We wish to continue to build a kitty to help us purchase more gear and fund events in the future. To donate to our PayPal account, click here.

Let us know if you have any questions or queries.

Mathew Bell - 0409 241 419

Location:
Cahills Lookout is located 6 minutes drive South West of Katoomba. Parking is available in the carpark on Cliff Drive, if it is full, please park your car off the road, safely, along Cliff Drive.
We will meet by the cars at 5:00pm.

Who Are We?!

We are a veterans photography group called the Veterans Instameet. Initially set up in 2014 by myself, Mathew Bell, a former grunt and an ex-engineer, Warrick Eady. We had both just come back from service in Afghanistan and found common ground through photography. After discharge we both felt completely disconnected from the defence community and found there was no photography outlets or groups veteran based. We felt that having this shared interest, we could get other like minded veterans together with photography as the basis and have fun and keep the connections to members post discharge. We soon expanded the group to include families of defence members and then the emergency services. We welcomed Andrew Judson on as one of the event coordinators, with his 10 years in defence, a background in personal training and budding outdoorsman.

We have since run 37 events in and around Sydney, Canberra and the Gold Coast.

We are comprised of former ADF members, current serving members, children of veterans, the emergency services, SES and a number of non serving civilians who support us and what we've been through.

Please Note:
As most of the events are outdoors, there is always a physical element. Most events require a walk from the carpark to the area of interest or a more strenuous trek. The majority of events are mobile, meaning we're constantly on the move while shooting. The important aspect to us is the psychological well being that comes from a day. The aim is for everyone to have fun and make connections to other people with shared backgrounds. Photography is in the background most of the time, we have the aim for everyone to chat, laugh and shoot photos.
Each event carries risk and by registering and attending the event, each participant agrees to take responsibility for their own safety. Safety is everyone's responsibility and if in doubt, or if anyone feels unsafe it is the individual’s responsibility to sit out the event or highlight it to the other members.  Each participant assumes all risk associated with any activity whilst with the Veterans Instameet. Each participant assumes full responsibility for themselves, their choices, their actions and their equipment.

My & Tin's Pre-wedding Shoot.

I had the pleasure of photographing My and Tin at La Perouse a few weeks before their wedding.

I had big shoes to fill as Tin is also a wedding photographer!

It was a true pleasure working with this photogenic couple on a cloudy Sunday afternoon.

Enjoy this little sneak peek.

Veterans Instameet #14

Come and join the Veterans Instameet team for our last expedition for 2017.

This Instameet with see us escape the hustle and bustle of Sydney, heading North to the Central Coast for some time by the water.

We have rented out a house on Lake Macquarie on Saturday 16th December. Numbers are limited to stay overnight, so it will be a first in best dressed for registration. The address will be provided once you register for the event and confirm you will be staying overnight.

To stay overnight there is a $60 charge for accommodation and food.

The plan is to get to the house before dinner, no later than 6pm. We will put on a BBQ and nibbilies. There are no plans to take photos on the Saturday night, rather more of a social event.

We will be up EARLY the next morning to head 20min out to Catherine Hill Bay to capture the sunrise from the Catherine Hill Bay Pier. For anyone who isn’t staying the night and would like to meet with us, the plan is to arrive around 5:00am at Catherine Hill Bay Surf Life Saving Club.

We plan on having a packed breakfast at Catherine Hill Bay, before leap frogging south to visit some of the Central Coasts best photography spots. Locations will include Nora Head and Long Jetty. We will stop somewhere for lunch (additional charges will apply)

We strongly suggest bringing along the following items:
- Warm weather and wet weather clothing
- Hiking Shoes / shoes with good grip
- A torch
- Food
- Plenty of water
- Camera, tripod and remote (if you have one)

After such great success at the last Veterans Instameet we’d love to do another few care packages to the troops overseas. Last Instameet we sent off SIX care packs filled with goodies!

We would love for everyone to bring along a few extra items again, nothing too crazy, just a few things that the troops will appreciate being on the other side of the world at Christmas.

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to get in touch with one of the team:

Mathew Bell - 0409 241 419
Andrew Judson - 0425 244 597
Warrick Eady - 0431 295 953

We should be in for a great adventure to end the year.
We hope to see you there!

Renae and David's Wedding Sneak Peek

Our final wedding of 2016 was that of David and Renae, both teachers who share a love of all things Disney.

Their ceremony was held at the beautiful Breakfast Point Community Centre and the reception was held at WatervieW in Bicentennial Park.

This fun loving couple was so easy to work with. They are so in love, there was never a moment when we would have to force them to look into each others eyes, that all came naturally.

Veterans Instameet 5.0

The fifth Veterans Instameet saw us in Sydney's Circular Quay on a Sunday afternoon in early March.

A group of fourteen of us met at Circular Quay Station, making our way through the Botanical Gardens ending the afternoon with a sunset shoot overlooking Sydney Harbour from Mrs Macquaires Chair.

We are looking to hold the next instameet in May in the Western Suburbs of Sydney.

The #veterans_instameet was the brain child of Warrick Eady Photography and I, both of us Afghanistan veterans. We had set out to bring together veterans that share a passion for photography in a relaxed friendly environment. We are hoping to share our combined knowledge of cameras and photography in order to help everyone develop their skills behind the camera.

Everyone is welcome to join - Veterans, ex and current serving ADF, Police, Emergency Service members plus the general public to show their support - this event is open to everyone with a keen interest in photography, it doesn't matter what you use! Phones, point and shoots, GoPro's or SLR's, or video, everyone is welcome to attend in support of those that have served.

Join us on an afternoon walking through the Western Sydney Parkland's ending the afternoon with a Sunset shoot over Cecil Hills Lake.

The fourth Veterans Instameet saw us on Sydney's Northern Beaches on a Sunday afternoon in early December.

A group of fifteen of us met at Queenscliff Beach then drove to Long Reef for a beautiful sunset and some steel wool spinning and light painting.

We are looking to hold the next instameet in March 2016 around Circular Quay, Sydney. The Veterans Instameets are organised to get veterans together in a relaxed environment where we can share tips and ideas about photography, but anyone into photography is welcome to come too.

If you are interested in photography and would like to spend an afternoon with like minded people shooting in great locations around Sydney then let me know, email me through the "Contact" page.
